How to Select and Maintain G80 Link Chains for Heavy Lifting?

Buying a set of G80 link chains is only the step. Using them correctly and keeping them in good condition determines how long they last and how safely they perform. For riggers, crane operators, and safety managers, knowing what to look for during selection and inspection matters as much as the purchase decision.

Matching the chain to the job

Not all G80 link chains are the same size. The chain diameter determines the working load limit. A 10mm G80 link chains product has a different capacity than a 13mm one. Selecting the wrong size creates a safety risk.

Before buying G80 link chains, calculate the load the chain will see. Include shock loads, not just steady pulls. Then choose G80 link chains with a working load limit above that number. The standard safety factor for grade 80 is 4:1, meaning the breaking strength is four times the working load limit.

Compatible fittings matter

G80 link chains are part of a complete lifting system. Hooks, shackles, master links, and other components should also be grade 80 rated. Mixing G80 link chains with lower grade fittings creates a weak link.

Check that every component has visible grade markings. G80 link chains show the grade number on links or tags. Fittings should have similar markings. If a component lacks a grade mark, do not use it with G80 link chains.

Daily visual inspection

Before each use, examine G80 link chains for obvious damage. Look for stretched links. A chain that has been overloaded will show elongation. Compare a suspect link to a known good one. Any visible stretching means the G80 link chains should be removed from service.

Check for nicks, gouges, or deep scratches. Surface wear is normal, but any cut that reduces link cross-section weakens G80 link chains. Use a caliper to measure link diameter at worn spots. If the diameter has reduced by more than 10 percent, replace the chain.

Cracks and heat damage

Cracks are serious defects in G80 link chains. They often appear near weld points on each link. A magnifying glass or dye penetrant kit helps find small cracks. Any cracked link means the entire G80 link chains assembly is unsafe.

Heat changes the properties of G80 link chains. If the chain has been exposed to high temperatures from welding, cutting, or fire, replace it. Even a single overheating event can ruin the heat treatment that gives G80 link chains their strength.

Measuring chain wear

G80 link chains wear over time. The internal surfaces where links rub against each other slowly erode. This wear increases the pitch length between links.

To measure wear, lay G80 link chains on a flat surface. Apply light tension to remove slack. Measure the length over a fixed number of links, typically 11 links. Compare to the original length. If G80 link chains have stretched more than 5 percent, retire them.

Cleaning and lubrication

Dirty G80 link chains hide defects. Clean G80 link chains regularly using a wire brush or solvent bath. Remove grit and debris that accelerate wear.

After cleaning, inspect G80 link chains again. Dirt can fill cracks and make them invisible. Only clean chains show true surface condition.

Lubrication of G80 link chains is recommended for applications. Light oil penetrates between links, reducing friction and wear. Heavy grease collects dirt and is not ideal for G80 link chains in dirty environments. Choose lubricant based on working conditions.

Storage practices

How G80 link chains are stored affects their lifespan. Hang G80 link chains on a rack or store them in a dry container. Do not leave G80 link chains on the ground where they collect moisture and debris.

Keep G80 link chains away from chemicals that can cause corrosion. Acidic or alkaline substances attack the steel surface. If G80 link chains are exposed to chemicals, wash them with clean water and dry thoroughly.

Record keeping for safety

Track each set of G80 link chains with a serial number or tag. Record the purchase date, working load limit, and inspection results. A logbook helps ensure G80 link chains are removed from service when due.

Regular inspections by a competent person are required in regulated workplaces. Even if not required by law, annual professional inspection of G80 link chains is good practice.

Knowing when to replace

G80 link chains do not last forever. Replace G80 link chains when any of the following conditions appear:

Visible stretching or elongation

Cracks in any link

Link diameter reduction over 10 percent

Severe corrosion or pitting

Heat damage or discoloration from high temperature

Bent or twisted links

Do not attempt to repair damaged G80 link chains. Welding or re-heat treating is not field work. Replace the entire assembly.

Training for users

Anyone using G80 link chains should understand these basic inspection and selection principles. A trained user recognizes problems early, before a failure occurs.

Proper selection and regular maintenance of G80 link chains are not complicated. But they require attention and consistency. A few minutes of inspection before each use and proper storage after each use keep G80 link chains safe for years of heavy lifting.
