In industries like construction, mining, and shipping, the choice of chain can mean the difference between safe operations and equipment failure. G80 link chains have become a standard for heavy lifting, but many buyers still wonder what actually separates them from traditional chains.
The differences are not small. Material, heat treatment, safety margins, and long-term cost all favor G80 link chains when the job involves lifting or securing heavy loads.
Traditional chains are often made from mild steel. They work fine for light-duty tasks like towing a small trailer or securing a load on a farm wagon. But mild steel lacks the tensile strength needed for industrial lifting.
G80 link chains are manufactured from heat-treated alloy steel. The alloy composition and controlled heat treatment change the steel’s internal structure. The result is a chain with much higher tensile strength than mild steel equivalents.
A standard G80 link chain product has a breaking force roughly four times its working load limit. This 4:1 safety factor is part of the grade 80 specification. Traditional chains without grade rating may not provide this margin. When lifting overhead, that margin matters.

G80 link chains must meet specific testing requirements. Standards like EN 818 (Europe) and ASTM (United States) define exactly how strong a chain must be to carry the grade 80 marking.
These standards require proof testing of G80 link chains before they leave the factory. Each chain is pulled to a specified proof load. Elongation is measured. Impact resistance is verified. Chains that fail any test are rejected.
Traditional chains, especially those not intended for lifting, rarely undergo such testing. A buyer has no way to know the actual breaking strength of an ungraded chain. G80 link chains eliminate that uncertainty.
In real-world use, chains see repeated cycles of loading and unloading. Each cycle stresses the material. Over time, cracks can develop and grow.
G80 link chains are designed specifically for this type of cyclic loading. The heat treatment process creates a material structure that resists crack initiation. Even after thousands of load cycles, G80 link chains maintain their strength.
Traditional mild steel chains work harden under repeated stress. They become brittle. A brittle chain can fail suddenly without warning. G80 link chains retain ductility, giving visual warning signs like link stretching before breaking.
Chains running over sheaves or dragging across concrete surfaces experience abrasion. G80 link chains have higher surface hardness than mild steel chains. The hard surface resists wear, keeping link diameters within tolerance longer.
Traditional chains wear faster. As links thin from abrasion, load capacity drops. A worn traditional chain may fail at a fraction of its original strength. G80 link chains with proper hardness maintain their capacity longer.
The initial price of G80 link chains is higher than traditional chains. That upfront cost gives many buyers pause. But looking only at purchase price misses the full picture.
G80 link chains last significantly longer under heavy use. One set may outlast three or four sets of traditional chains in the same application. When replacement costs and downtime are factored in, G80 link chains become the more economical choice.
Consider a crane using a chain sling daily. A traditional chain might need replacement every six months. G80 link chains could last two years or more. Over five years, the G80 link chains save money despite the higher cost.
G80 link chains are clearly marked. The grade number (80) is stamped into each link or on attached tags. Working load limits are visible. This makes routine safety inspections straightforward.
Traditional chains often lack any grade marking. An inspector cannot tell the safe working load just by looking. G80 link chains remove this guessing game. Every responsible rigger should prefer G80 link chains for this reason alone.
Grade 80 fittings are designed to match G80 link chains. Hooks, shackles, master links, and other components rated for grade 80 have the same strength and safety factor. This creates a matched lifting system.
Mixing traditional chains with grade 80 fittings creates a weak point. The chain fails before the fittings do. Sticking with G80 link chains throughout the assembly ensures predictable performance.
Many G80 link chains now come with corrosion protection. Galvanizing, powder coating, or other treatments extend chain life in wet or chemical environments.
Traditional chains rust quickly outdoors. Rust pits create stress concentration points. G80 link chains with proper surface treatment resist this degradation, staying safe longer.
For light-duty, non-overhead applications, traditional chains may still be adequate. But for any lifting, hoisting, or critical securing, G80 link chains are the better option. The combination of known strength, safety standards, fatigue resistance, and long-term value makes them the industry standard for good reason.
